After 2 weeks of our fabulous vacation traveling through Europe, our last stop was Rome. I’m a big fan of Italian food but I had no idea how good it could actually be. We stayed in Campo Di’ Fiori and had our first meal at Osteria da Fortunata, a little restaurant close to our apartment with amazing food and warm hospitality. I saw meatballs in lemon sauce on the menu which I thought was different so I tried them. They were fabulous.
Every night we enjoyed gelato while walking around Piazza Navona, watching street musicians perform and soaking in the general splendor. A word on gelato…Italians are very passionate about what’s real and what’s fake. For instance, we stopped in a shop that had offered neon blue gelato that was “Viagra” flavored – obviously this is fake. We were told that if the gelato is a color that is unnatural, such as pistachio that is bright green or in this case – neon blue, don’t try it.
In addition to eating well, we walked all over Rome and visited sites such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Vatican. During our time in Rome we took a day trip to Naples to visit Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius (which was incredible as was the Napoletana pizza). Our final day of the trip was a bit sad but we participated in a food tour which was really fun. We had enjoyed Pizza, Cheese & Prosciutto, Pistachio Cannoli’s…and of course, Gelato.
