Every place we visited in Europe was amazing but I have to say that Venice has a special place in my heart. After spending time in London and Paris it was nice not to be in a bustling city. There were quite a lot of people in Venice, but there was also a laid back, relaxing vibe, where we just strolled around the island for hours. We had our first introduction to authentic Italian food and it was AMAZING. There were a couple really special places in Venice that I have to mention.
The first was Dal Moro’s. This tiny establishment is basically a counter to place and pick up your order and then you go find a stoop to eat your homemade pasta. They serve their food in to go containers, its simply made and out of this world. We actually were in Venice 3 days and we went here twice. I had formaggi (cheese) sauce with ham over angel hair. My fiancé got a spicy arrabbiata sauce over fusilli. Like I said, their pasta is on another level.
We also enjoyed dinner at a little romantic restaurant called Osteria Alla Staffa. The place is quaint and the staff are incredible. We started with a mixed seafood antipasti (picture below). It included several types of fresh shellfish accompanied by different garnishes. For my entree I had Black Squid Ink Ravioli filled with Seabass served over a saffron cream sauce. This is one of my top five 5 dishes I’ve had in my life. It was outrageous.
The last night we were in Venice we splurged on some decadent desserts at Quadri cafe right in St Mark’s square and enjoyed some people watching. There were live quartets performing and we watched as the crowd’s would shift in front of whichever group was playing. I enjoyed a hazelnut gelato sundae and a cappuccino. Onto Rome!
